Famous Cities of the World: Lisbon

Lisbon is a beautiful city, one of the most charming not only in Portugal but in the entire world. Lisbon is not only the capital of Portugal, it is also its biggest city, but it is rather unlike most cities of its size. Lisbon is one of Europe’s most beautiful and livable cities, with a variety of cuisines, cultures, and leisure activities. Though a large and cosmopolitan capital city, the cost of living is reasonable and the people have a well-earned reputation for their friendliness and welcoming of foreigners. Lisbon is also a friendly city. The people are helpful and there are wonderful neighborhoods to explore.

Lisbon is built on hills looking over the River Tagus. Modern and cosmopolitan, it is a great centre of culture and tourism, and a pleasure to discover on foot. Lisbon is a contraction of Olisipo, its name as capital of the Lusitanians. From the Romans it passed to the Goths, from the Goths to the Moors (716), who kept their hold of it down to 1147, to Alfonso I.

Lisbon is located in the estuary of the River Tagus, and is linked to the other bank by two bridges. The Ponte 25 de Abril is one of the biggest bridges in Europe. Lisbon is really a wonderful place to explore, any time of the year. If you are lucky, the sky is blue and the sun is shining even in February and November. Lisbon is known as the white city, thanks to its unique luminosity. The light, the atmosphere and the climate offer marvellous walks all over the city.

Lisbon is stacked with great bars and clubs. After 11 at night the beautiful old Biarro Alto (upper town) comes to life. Only 50 minutes from Cascais and 45 minutes from Estoril by train. Lisbon is Europe’s west coast Capital and the closest gateway to Africa and Americas. It is also known as the white city, for its unique luminosity.
